July 18th Demonstration Update:

The City of Pine Island has been notified that there is a peaceful demonstration scheduled for Saturday, July 18th from 3:30 pm through the rest of the evening. The City is collaborating with the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Department to ensure the safety of its citizens, businesses and the demonstrators while they exercise their first amendment right to freedom of speech. The demonstration is expected to take place in the public parking lot across from City Hall starting at 3:30 PM.

Organizers have informed the City they are expecting approximately 20-30 demonstrators and may be walking on the sidewalk along Main Street between 3rd St South to Center Street at some point during the event. This may happen on either side of the street. It is not expected all demonstrators will participate in the walks. Demonstrators have been advised they cannot obstruct the street since they have not acquired a permit from the City (ordinance 10.41) or from the County. The demonstrators will be mindful of other citizens and businesses using public sidewalks and will not be continuously obstructing walkways.

The Pine Island Aquatic Center will be closed for the 2020 season. Yesterday, on June 15, 2020, our public works department arrived at the pool to begin filling it for cleaning. During this process, the crew found that the main filter pipe was severely cracked. This pipe is essential to the pool’s operation as it feeds all filtered water back to the pool. The damaged pipe is located in the maintenance room in the bathhouse. At this time, we are unsure of how much damage there is.

Last fall we enlisted the help of the construction crew who built the pool to winterize the structure since our staff was not yet familiar with this process. We suspect that this pipe may not been fully emptied and froze sometime during the winter months. We have been in contact with the company who is able to look at the damage sometime next week. We will not know the extent of the damage until they are on scene, however it is predicted that we may have to remove a portion of the pool deck to replace the pipe. Unfortunately, we are estimating that it will take a minimum of three weeks for this to be resolved, but could be longer if the damage is more extensive than what we can see on the surface.

Public works staff was directed to hold off on filling the pool to help the city save costs until a decision was made on whether the pool would be open. This is because the pool would have had to be maintained from the time it was filled, which would have involved daily testing, use of chemicals and manpower hours. It is unfortunate that this has occurred, however the city is working swiftly with the construction company to get this resolved. At this time, it does not appear that the pool will be ready to open by the projected opening date of July 13, 2020 and as such the city council voted unanimously to not open for the 2020 season.  Instead, they directed city staff to redirect the remaining budget funds for the 2020 season to purchase embellishments and make improvements for the 2021 season.
